Peter worked in the main galley and was "a willing, hardworking young man with the ability to develop well. He can be relied upon to do any job he is given well but tends to wait until he is given jobs and must think for himself." Peter became A.CK on 8th January 1973. Whilst at HMS Warrior Peter became friendly with someone who worked in the communications area. When Peter was informed that his first ship would be HMS Devonshire he was told that he would join the ship at Portsmouth. Peter kept being told this in the week leading up to his date for joining the ship. However his mate was adamant that Peter could not possibly join the ship at Portsmouth on the Saturday as stated, although he couldn't tell him why this would be impossible. On Peter's last Wednesday at HMS Warrior he was told to go home and get his full kit, including tropical gear, and be back within about 2 hours. Peter managed this, with help from his family only to be given a whole range of tickets and other documents! He started his trip to join his ship by being driven out to Brize Norton! This took him via various planes to Canada, and then down to Washington. He then went further south and eventually joined his ship in time for Saturday, but not at Portsmouth! It was moored of an island in the Caribbean!!! The ship was on its way back to Portsmouth, but it took several months to do so!
