Peter's Health

Created by Anne 15 years ago
Peter was diagnosed with having diabetes in January 1993, which was initially controlled by tablets and diet. On thursday 27th May 1993 Peter was working at Harrow Road and had just completed a cash handover (before starting his annual leave)when he started to feel unwell. At first he thought it must be something to do with the diabetes, but he began to feel much worse and realised that it was something much more serious than high blood sugar. He asked one of his staff to call a police officer in from the canteen and about 3 or 4 of them came to see him. Peter asked them to call an ambulance, which they did, and by the time it arrived he was barely conscious and in a great deal of pain. He was taken to St Mary's Hospital in Paddington where he was given emergency treatment and later transferred to the coronary care unit. On the Saturday morning Peter was given an emergency operation to inflate (from the inside) the collapsed artery which had caused the heart attack. This should have been a quick and straight forward operation. Unfortunately when the surgeon was trying to open up the artery, apparently the artery split. Peter was immediately in a great deal of pain again, as he was awake during the whole operation, which took a lot longer than expected. Peter was told that during the operation that there was another surgeon present who was monitoring the situation and that at any point it may have been necessary for Peter to have had an emergency by-pass operation. Fortunately this was not needed and the split was repaired, using the angioplasty equipment. After the angioplasty Peter made a steady recovery. He was determined to get well so that he could make his wedding, which was arranged for 5th June. He was told that if he wanted to be there it would have to be a very quiet sedate affair.
